Getting to Certaldo
By Car
To reach Certaldo by car: from the northwest, take the Fi-Pi-Li highway and exit at Empoli Ovest, then follow the SS429 towards Siena for about 25 km; from the northeast (Bologna), exit the A1 at Firenze Certosa, take the FI-SI link road and exit at Poggibonsi Nord following signs for Certaldo; from the south, exit the A1 at Valdichiana, continue towards Siena and then towards Florence, always exiting at Poggibonsi Nord for Certaldo.
By Train
Certaldo is located on the Florence-Empoli-Siena railway line. You can check the Italian State Railways website for train schedules. Once you arrive at the station, continue on foot along Via 2 Giugno with the station behind you. After 200 meters, once in Piazza Boccaccio, take the funicular up to Certaldo Alto (tickets can be purchased at the funicular entrance).
By Plane
The two most important airports are Pisa Galileo Galilei (PSA, 70km from Certaldo) and Florence (FLR, 60km from Certaldo). Only Pisa airport is served by the railway network, while from Florence Airport the train station can be reached by taxi or bus. Bologna airport also sometimes offers good alternatives for reaching the city of Certaldo.
A ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone) is in effect in Certaldo Alto: access is only allowed via the funicular, active every day, or by taking the scenic road from Via del Bosco. It may be convenient to leave your car in the lower part and go up with the funicular. In general, the funicular departs every 15 minutes from 07:30 and runs until late at night (in winter until 19:30 and in summer until 1:00 am).
If you use a GPS navigator: we recommend setting your destination as “Via delle Mura”, thus avoiding impractical routes such as Costa degli Alberti.
